Laboratory Engineer - Department for Hydrogen Technology


Job description

Hydrogen as an energy carrier is a marked in rapid growth and an expanding activity at IFE. We are looking for a strong candidate to further increase the capacity and competence of the Hydrogen Technology department. In the research group, there is a long and unique competence on hydrogen, with R&D activities on water electrolysis, storage of hydrogen as a liquid or in solid compounds, fuel cells, and renewable energy-based hydrogen systems.

The department hosts a national fuel cell and hydrogen laboratory for testing of key hydrogen technologies and systems. It has specialized laboratories for the preparation, characterization and development of hydrogen materials and other key components. Due to an increased workload in our laboratories, we now need to expand by recruiting an engineer that can take responsibility for our advanced laboratory equipment, develop experimental setups and contribute to running experiments. The work will include safety evaluations of technology and experiments. We are looking for an engineer with a positive attitude, dedication to the work tasks and good problem-solving skills.

Duties and responsibilities

The engineer will support the Department for Hydrogen Technology with the following:

  • Installation and maintenance of laboratory infrastructure, instruments, test setups, and gas systems in complex laboratories.
  • Practical project development from conceptualization and design to implementation, including the drawing of process diagrams (P&ID).
  • Planning and running experiments, including writing reports and analyzing data.
  • Hydrogen safety and HSE work related to infrastructure and instruments.


  • Engineering degree or MSc in process technology, mechanical engineering, chemistry, or similar.
  • Work experience in building and/or running gas systems, experimental test rigs and setups, instrumentation, and data monitoring.
  • Experience with hydrogen gas is desirable.
  • Experience with safety evaluation/HSE is desirable.
  • Very good hands-on experience and working in laboratory environment.
  • Need to have good written and oral communication skills in English.
  • Knowledge of Norwegian is desirable.
