About CERN

At CERN, the European Organization for Nuclear Research, physicists, engineers and technicians are working side by side to probe the fundamental structure of the universe. They use the world's largest and most complex scientific instruments to study the basic constituents of matter – the fundamental particles. The particles are made to collide together at close to the speed of light. The process gives the physicists clues about how the particles interact, and provides insights into the fundamental laws of nature.

The instruments used at CERN are purpose-built particle accelerators and detectors. Accelerators boost beams of particles to high energies before the beams are made to collide with each other or with stationary targets. Detectors observe and record the results of these collisions.

Founded in 1954, the CERN laboratory sits astride the Franco-Swiss border near Geneva. It was one of Europe's first joint ventures and now has 23 member states.

What is CERN?

What is the nature of our universe? What is it made of? These are the questions we are striving to find answers to at CERN. CERN provides a unique range of particle accelerator facilities that enable research at the forefront of human knowledge, to perform world-class research in fundamental physics, and most of all to unite people from all over the world to push the frontiers of science and technology, for the benefit of all. Beyond science, we also aim to be a politically neutral voice for science, advocating investment in fundamental research and evidence-based policy; to build further links with industry in terms of the transfer of knowledge from CERN to industry; to train a new generation of scientists and engineers; and to inspire and nurture scientific awareness in all citizens.

Working at CERN

Imagine taking part in the largest scientific experiment in the world. People often associate CERN with physics alone, however to perform physics research on this scale requires the engineers, technicians and support staff to design, build, operate and maintain the huge and complex accelerator, detector and related infrastructures. This means we are looking to hire people like you, across all disciplines ranging from electronics and electrical engineering to radiofrequency, vacuum, civil engineering, mechanics, material science, controls and data acquisition and more; we even hire firefighters. And to top it all, CERN is the birthplace of the World Wide Web and today, a hub for large scale and distributed computing, so if this is your field, you’ll find your place at CERN.

So look no further: if you're a student, a graduate, just starting your career or an experienced professional, whatever your field of expertise, CERN could be your next opportunity!

Even after 15 years, coming to CERN as a technical Student still remains the best decision of my life. Every day is filled with challenging problems, wonderful people and unsolved mysteries while working on tomorrow’s solutions.

Diversity and inclusion

Diversity, or the bringing together of people from different countries and cultures to work on a common goal, has been an integral part of CERN’s mission since its foundation. It is a key value for CERN and the Diversity and inclusion programme works on many fronts to ensure we all enjoy a unique experience, working together, side by side in a multicultural, multidisciplinary work environment, without political or religious barriers. Most recently, the 25 by '25 strategy has been launched: a long-term commitment to boosting diversity within the Staff and Graduate population, in two dimensions in which CERN reports on: gender and nationality.

And CERN’s reach is vast: the transfer of CERN technologies and expertise to society is an integral part of CERN’s activities, providing novel solutions in many fields. Find out more about Knowledge Transfer at CERN. The CERN & Society Foundation has as its mission is to support and promote the mission of CERN and disseminate its benefits to the wider public. It operates nationally and internationally across three main areas: Education & Outreach, Innovation & Knowledge Exchange, and Culture & Creativity.

So many exciting reasons to take part… don’t hesitate and apply now!
